Spend an evening under the stars enjoying adventure and romance on the high seas as Wolf Trap welcomes the acclaimed New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players for an outdoor performance of one of the best-loved operettas of all time, The Pirates of Penzance. It's the story of Frederic, who is mistakenly apprenticed to a band of pirates as a boy. Expecting to be released on his 21st birthday, he meets and falls in love with the lovely young Mabel, but the poor lad soon discovers that, due to a leap-year technicality, another 60 years or so must pass before he is free. This classic comedy features well-known songs like "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General" and "Poor Wandering One," not to mention plenty of Gilbert & Sullivan's signature fast-paced banter.

Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado at Wolf Trap

Full Price:
$12.00 - $42.00
Our Price:
$6.00 - $21.00

The Mikado is one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most-loved works, and one of the most popular operettas in the English language. Set in the fictional Japanese town of Titipu (in which flirting is a capital offense), The Mikado tells the story of wandering minstrel Nanki-Poo, who falls in love with the fair Yum-Yum, who happens to be engaged to the town's newly appointed Lord High Executioner. A deliciously intelligent satire, the Japanese setting allowed Gilbert and Sullivan to slyly mask their commentary on contemporary British society. This classic and surprisingly modern tale of star-crossed lovers features the beloved tunes "Three Little Maids From School Are We" and "A Wand'ring Minstrel I." It's produced by the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players. Led by artistic director Albert Bergeret, this famed troupe has delighted audiences since 1974 as "the leading custodian of the G&S classics" (New York Magazine). Learn More

An outstanding production of one of Gilbert's funniest books and Sullivan's subtle parody of operatic convention - well acted, sung, and staged in spite of the sweltering heat and the onset of the torrential storms that forced us to sprint for the parking lot after the finale. Looking forward to the company's return to Wolf Trap next summer!

Was a great performance. Unfortunately it was on the hottest day of the year thus far and when we had a tremendous storm. So missed the last couple numbers and was soaked on the way to the car. Otherwise really enjoyed it!!!
