    More Information

Contra Costa Musical Theatre (CCMT)  opens its 48th season with the classic Broadway musical “42nd Street” at Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for the Arts. Featuring favorite songs such as “We’re in the Money,” “I Only Have Eyes for You,” and “The Lullaby of Broadway,” “42nd Street” is sure to entertain those who have been singing these songs for years and those hearing them for the very first time.

The second-longest-running hit in the history of the Great White Way, “42nd Street” reversed the long tradition of turning Broadway plays into Hollywood movies. Producers borrowed a dozen Harry Warren and Al Dubin hit songs from 1930s movie musicals, including “42nd Street,“ and provided the show its title tune and “backstage musical” plot.

During the height of the Depression, a naive tap dancer named Peggy Sawyer, played by Courtney Iventosch, arrives in New York City fresh off the bus from Allentown, PA. With no money, but loads of talent and big dreams, the spunky kid works up her nerve to audition for “Pretty Lady,” a Broadway show in the heart of New York City’s theater district on 42nd Street. The show can only go on if it stars the famous stage veteran Dorothy Brock, played by Terry D’Emidio, since her sugar daddy, Abner Dillon, is putting up the dough. But what if the diva happens to break her leg just before opening night?

The last time CCMT brought “42nd Street” to East Bay audiences was over ten years ago, and this year’s production features many of those same actors and actresses who tapped their way into hearts then including Scott Strain, Dustin Riggs, Terry D’Emidio, Heidi Schmidt and Martin Newton. This version of “42nd Street” also features favorite local talent Tom Reardon, who has appeared in numerous East Bay musicals over the years. Audiences may also recognize him from his daily “role” as a judge in Alameda.

This is the second musical Jennifer Dennison Perry has directed for Contra Costa Musical Theatre, her first being the highly praised “Guys and Dolls.” Dennison Perry is joined by Musical Director Ken Bergmann and Vocal Director Joe Simiele. Sets, created by Kelly Tighe capture the bustling, backstage thrill of Broadway and create a marvelous backdrop for the high-energy choreography, created by Renee DeWeese.
