Audra McDonald, the only performer of either gender to win six Tony Awards, returns to the Symphony Hall stage. McDonald won her Tony Awards for performances in Carousel, Master Class, Ragtime, A Raisin in the Sun, The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess and, most recently, as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill. Frequently praised for her pure, powerful soprano voice, this extraordinary artist -- who The New York Times calls "a defining voice of our time" -- has also won two Grammy Awards, starred as Dr. Naomi Harris for four seasons on ABC's Private Practice and released her first solo album in seven years, Go Back Home, just last year. An enjoyable evening. My husband and I particularly enjoyed Act I. We loved the performances of South Pacific and Oklahoma numbers. Act II was completely different as the show reenacted a radio show. The skits were fun to watch but lot's of the music in Act II was not familiar to us. Overall, this was a high energy performance and you could see that the singers and dancers really enjoyed doing it. I do recommend this event if it comes to your town.
