I didn't care for this. It was too long and woodenly acted. It just shot for the cheap laughs and I didn't find it funny. I left during one of the two intermissions.Written on Oct 18 2009

Paul!
Very fun play although as one reviewer previously stated, almost three hours long! Well acted farce without a dry moment...highly recommend.Written on Oct 19 2009

go to Cafe St. Ex first, the celery root soup was great and the sweet potato fries were delicious.Written on Nov 06 2009
the play was funny and despite the time, I did not feel like it dragged on at all! It was entertaining and nice to be in such an intimate venue so as to really feel for the actors.

More Information About A Flea in Her Ear
Description
Constellation Theatre Company is presenting the Washington, DC premiere of David Ives’ new version of Georges Feydeau’s brilliant French farce – A Flea in Her Ear. A pair of missing suspenders is the catalyst for a wild trip to the Frisky Puss Hotel where Raymonde Chandebise has set a trap to catch her husband Victor with a lover. Fourteen hilarious characters share an ardent appetite for affection. This spinning vortex of comedy fuels a delicious romp around a revolving bed and the ultimate chase sequence.
Georges Feydeau is widely regarded as the unequivocal master of the French bedroom farce. His most celebrated work, A Flea in Her Ear, was written in 1907 at the height of La Belle Epoque when Picasso was creating Cubism and Einstein was developing The Theory of Relativity. This light, fluffy and amusing story is told through a brilliantly constructed plot and is played with breathtaking speed. Feydeau’s comedy is compassionate as well as ridiculously funny. The ordinary reality of the charming characters is turned upside down by extraordinary and outrageous circumstances. Misplaced jealousies, amorous entanglements and mistaken identities create confusion, excitement, extreme emotion and hilarious high jinks.
David Ives’ new version of this classic farce was first produced by Chicago Shakespeare Theater in 2006 and received a notable production by Williamstown Theatre Festival in the summer of 2008. Ives, a graduate of Northwestern University and Yale School of Drama, is best known for his comedic one-act plays, six of which are often produced together as an evening called All In The Timing.
Feydeau and Ives make a delicious match as the physical comedy demanded by slamming doors, revolving beds and rollicking stage combat is matched with witty word play and clever banter. An improbable collection of speech impediments and foreign accents heightens the theme of miscomprehension. An absurd breakdown of communication leads to a growing sense of insanity that is finally put to rest with a delightful resolution. This endlessly entertaining tale of sex and romance may at times be naughty and risqué but in the end proves to be a celebration of honesty, fidelity and love.
Constellation’s production is set in the 1920’s in Paris. “The Roaring 20’s was a time of motion, change, decadence and pleasure. The flair and rhythm of the Jazz Age is well-suited to the script,” explains director Allison Arkell Stockman. A Flea in Her Ear is a delectable piece of good-humored libertinism and complete comic escapism. The audience travels to a frisky, flirtatious place and time for an effervescent experience that embraces the joy and silliness of the moment.
