Tony Award-Winning Musical Spring Awakening by Keegan Theatre

Spring Awakening is an awesome rock musical and Broadway smash that won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. Based on the Expressionist play that caused a scandal in 19th-century Germany, this poignant musical follows a group of teenagers as they navigate the confusing and often troubled waters of adolescence, complicated by their budding sexuality. Inspired by Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 play, the musical's angst, emotion, desire and romance still ring true today, and its acclaimed score by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater turns this timeless story into a powerful coming-of-age rock musical. The Keegan Theatre's production is directed by two-time Helen Hayes nominees Susan Marie Rhea and Mark A. Rhea. Learn More

An enjoyable musical especially for those of Irish ancestry. A good story, some lilting tunes, and a very talented cast. Highly recommended. Only complaint--a little long at almost 3 hours.

Description

The Keegan Theatre presents the musical  A Man of No Importance at the Church Street Theater. A Man of No Importance, with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and a book by Terrence McNally, based on the 1994 movie by Albert Finney, tells the tender story of Alfie Byrne, a bus driver living in 1960s Dublin. A passionate fan of Oscar Wilde, Alfie is determined to stage a version of Salome at his church, despite the objections of church authorities. In the process of fighting for the play, Alfie is finally forced to confront his own sexuality and take a stand in the world.  To bring this script to life, Keegan has re-assembled the artistic team that brought RENT to DC audiences earlier this season:  Mark A. Rhea, Aaron Broderick, and Kurt Boehm return as co-director, music director, and choreographer, respectively.  Christina A. Coakley, Rhea’s co-director, completes the artistic leadership team for A Man of No Importance.

A Man of No Importance is a great script for Keegan for a range of reasons," explains Coakley.  "The fact that it's set in Ireland, of course, is one obvious connection.  But it's also a great fit because the story is an intimate one, best told in a smaller space like Church Street. It's a personal story, a piece about finding yourself, about the connections we make to our community and to the artist inside of us, and ultimately about the day-to-day braveries that make an ordinary man a hero.  In short:  it's a Keegan kind of story, and we have the talent and the venue to do honor to this beautiful musical."

As with RENT, Keegan welcomes several actors to A Man of No Importance who are new to the company: Buzz Mauro, Deb Gottesman, Kristen Jepperson, and Madeline Botteri are just a few of the talented Keegan newcomers in this production.  "It’s always a pleasure to work with artists who are new to Keegan -- some of them are new to DC audiences as well – and to have them complement our company of actors," says Rhea.  "We have company members in this show, we have young and emerging actors making their Keegan debut, and we have DC veterans who are joining us for the first time in A Man of No Importance.  All of this is great for the production -- we're enjoying the fresh energy that comes with getting to know each other as we work."

A Man of No Importance features Brian Cali, Buzz Mauro, Charlie Retzlaff, Chris Gillespie, Gannon O’Brien, Joshua Dick, Jane Petkofsky, Harv Lester, Kristen Jepperson, Madeline Botteri, Kaitlin Hitchings, Katie McManus, John Robert Keena, Deb Gottesman, Michael Toth, Paige Felix and Tim Lynch.
