Set during the rural economic slowdown of the 1970s, playwright Sam Shepard's universally acclaimed Buried Child resonates as strongly today as it did when it launched Shepard's career in 1978. A Pulitzer winner for drama, Buried Child makes for a fierce, forceful and unforgettable portrayal of the realities of the American Dream. The realistic masterpiece mixes comedy and drama, keen commentary and deep emotion in a squalid farm home occupied by a clan filled with suppressed violence, apparent unhappiness and dark secrets. Kenneth Kelleher directs this San Jose Stage Company production. Learn More

Excellent production of a difficult and intriguing work. Uncompromising, and not for everyone. More like Wozzeck (the opera) than a musical, so be guided accordingly as to your own tastes. Extremely well staged and performed.
Seating is general admission. Doors open approximately 15 minutes before curtain, but the line starts forming about 30 minutes before curtain. To ensure your best choice of seats, arrive early.

Excellent production and very thought provoking, but beware, I found the story to be very depressing.

This play was enjoyed by my entire family. A dynamic, engaging evening, providing a look at 1920's attitudes. Beautifully performed!

Description

Adding Machine: A Musical
by Joshua Schmidt and Jason Loewith
directed by Jason Loewith

Elmer Rice’s expressionistic masterpiece re-imagined in a stunning new musical! After losing his job to a machine, Mr. Zero’s monotonous life swirls into chaos. With jangling, percussive music reflecting period influences – including early-20th-century modernists, Tin Pan Alley and gospel – this work conjures a vision of American life in the 1920s at odds with that decade’s popular image as a happy-go-lucky era ended only by the Depression. It is a vision that feels eerily in tune with our own unsettled economy.
