Kairat Umarov, Kazakhstan's Ambassador to the US, is scheduled to be on hand as the Washington DCJCC screens his country's award-winning 2008 drama The Gift to Stalin. Rustem Abdrashev's poignant film is set in 1949 and follows the difficult journey of a Jewish boy, deported to Central Asia during a Stalinist purge, who's orphaned and taken in by an Muslim old man. Subtitled from its original Russian/Kazakh/Hebrew, the film's been praised for its lush cinematography and compared to coming-of-age classics like Cinema Paradiso. Learn More

The Cantor had a wonderful voice but Yiddish songs that I heard as a child were sung by ordinary people......so the words were more distinct and the melody more down to earth. There were at least three or four songs that I heard my Mother and Grandmother sing and that was most enjoyable. Overall a joyous evening of music. Thank you.
