Washington National Opera performs Richard Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos. As this brilliantly light-hearted opera begins, a serious opera company and a commedia dell'arte troupe have arrived at a dinner party, and are forced to perform at the same time. Chaos, hilarity, and beautiful melodies result.

LA Opera presents the company premiere of Verdi's masterpiece, Simon Boccanegra, starring the legendary Placido Domingo. Domingo's interpretation of one of the most complex characters in opera is complemented by conductor James Conlon, internationally recognized as a master with Verdi, and rounded out by a top-rate cast. The opera itself is an epic tale of ambition and betrayal spanning two generations. The poignancy of Verdi's score truly shines in the heartwrenching scenes between father and daughter, who exemplify the ideals of familial love and loyalty. Learn More

This is a rather daring idea for an opera. It's a mash-up of Commedia dell'Arte and grand opera. The music is excellent and although the songs are enjoyable, for the most part they aren't particularly memorable. The costumes and staging are very good and the performers are pretty good.

The singing later in the opera is absolutely beautiful! The story is performed and comes together much better than the Playbill would make you believe. I thoroughly enjoyed the opera!!

The opera was delightful and our seats were excellent. In the second act of the opera there are guests on the stage. Because it was an opening night - on the stage as part of the cast were justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia.

Quotes & Highlights

  • “(Petrova's) soprano can blaze, but also lap teasingly and glow warmly.” --Dallas Morning News

Description

The show must go on – a statement exemplified by Richard Strauss’ light-hearted jewel, Ariadne auf Naxos. The trouble begins as a serious opera company and a commedia dell'arte troupe arrive to entertain the guests at a posh dinner party and the wealthy host demands that they perform together in order to save time for the evening’s fireworks display. The resultant pandemonium is both cleverly amusing and deeply touching. With beautiful melodies and relentless energy, this play-within-a-play offers audiences a hilarious foray into the world behind the curtain. Andreas Delfs conducts this stunning production by Chris Alexander.

After her triumphant debut in last season’s Siegfried, Iréne Theorin returns to sing the title role.  WNO favorite Lyubov Petrova will flirt and flounce as the incorrigible Zerbinetta – a role perfectly suited for her.
