The Kennedy Center - Opera House (Washington, DC)
Rated 2.5 by 6 members who went.
Washington National Opera performs Richard Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos. As this brilliantly light-hearted opera begins, a serious opera company and a commedia dell'arte troupe have arrived at a dinner party, and are forced to perform at the same time. Chaos, hilarity, and beautiful melodies result.

The show must go on – a statement exemplified by Richard Strauss’ light-hearted jewel, Ariadne auf Naxos. The trouble begins as a serious opera company and a commedia dell'arte troupe arrive to entertain the guests at a posh dinner party and the wealthy host demands that they perform together in order to save time for the evening’s fireworks display. The resultant pandemonium is both cleverly amusing and deeply touching. With beautiful melodies and relentless energy, this play-within-a-play offers audiences a hilarious foray into the world behind the curtain. Andreas Delfs conducts this stunning production by Chris Alexander.
After her triumphant debut in last season’s Siegfried, Iréne Theorin returns to sing the title role. WNO favorite Lyubov Petrova will flirt and flounce as the incorrigible Zerbinetta – a role perfectly suited for her.
