Known for its gorgeous Alpine countryside, its intellectual and artistic pursuits -- and of course, its pastries -- Austria is also historically and currently home to an active music scene. This embassy event, co-sponsored by Professionals in the City, celebrates that movement with a screening of Vinyl: Tales from the Vienna Underground, a documentary exposing that city's cutting-edge experimental and electronic music scene. That's followed by a live set by The Happy Kids, an Austrian indie band featuring Boy (Al Bird) on fuzz organ and girl (Ana Threat) on surf guitar. While enjoying the entertainment, guests can also help themselves to a dinner buffet of the country's favorite dishes along with an open bar of Austrian wine and other non-alcoholic beverages.

Great crowd, interesting people, nice venue, and great place to have a party. The food came too late because the movie ran too long (in my opinion, the move, while interesting, got in the way of the event). The chef kept the food hot, the wine was plentiful, and the staff was great. The band was interesting, but there was only one room so as the volume went up, the opportunity for conversation went down. In short, glad I went but I will pay more attention to the schedule next time.

Nice selection of wines, food was okay, and entertainment was interesting (although the film could have used better editing).
No dessert was provided, despite the fact that strudel was a highlight of the menu that came with the description of the event-- rather disappointing after waiting more than 45 min for the anticipated dessert to appear.

Entertainments was a very Long, very Boring movie that was also offensive. Long line for food Buffet--after the movie, food was a big disappointment. Music provided was not appropriate for most of the people attending the event.

There was a long documentary on a music (?) underground world. I think we all got the point after 15 minutes that yes, Vienna is not all about Waltz. We did not need a documentary that lasted over an hour to make this point. Most big cities have all kinds of peoples (just like Washington, DC doesn't just have the White House) but it seems like the peoples shown in this video were kind of "lost". Lots of cigarette smoking on the screen (which was probably the only "legal" stuff they could show). Kind of depressing, really. Good luck to the "youth" of Vienna!

Description

Requested attire is business casual.
This is a reception-style/walk-around event.

The movie Vinyl: Tales from the Vienna Underground is about the hidden experimental and electronic music world in Vienna. Well known artists such as Kruder & Dorfmeister, Christian Fennesz or Electric Indigo present the current Vienna music scene which - step by step - could turn into some kind of New-Berlin. The movie is shot as a documentary, and is at the same time a declaration of love to vinyl records as a cultural phenomenon. In the movie, vinyl is represented as a metaphor of something that is loved despite its imperfection. By doing so, it reflects the artist's connection to the city of Vienna. The movie will start promptly at 7:30pm and is approximately 80 minutes long.

The Austrian band The Happy Kids likes to do things its own way. Boy (Al Bird) on fuzz organ, girl (Ana Threat) on surf guitar, plus a tape deck that spits out vintage drum machine beats at an inappropriate speed and volume - that's the way they do it. The duo's first EP, 7, was released on their newly founded label Trash Rock Productions, and was reviewed enthusiastically both nationally and abroad. The band has performed live with minds like Mr. Quintron & Miss Pussycat, The Pharmacy, Pirate Love, Electronicat and Mondo Ray. Molding the stars of tomorrow, ripping off the non-entities of yesterday, The Happy Kids are what's happening!
