Romeo and Juliet is one of the world's most well-known love stories -- a timeless tale of two star-crossed lovers set among 13th century violence in Verona, Italy. In I Capuleti e i Montecchi (The Capulets and the Montagues), Bellini's operatic version of this dramatic story, Romeo and Juliet are instead Romeo and Giulietta, two teenagers from rival political factions (rather than two fighting families) who fall in love with tragic consequences. Filled with graceful arias and long, sinuous melodies that helped define the bel canto style, I Capuleti e i Montecchi will be brought to life by the Washington Concert Opera with the help of Metropolitan Opera star Olga Peretyatko as Giulietta and Seattle Opera's Artist of the Year, Kate Lindsey, as Romeo. Eva Yerbabuena is famed for her speed, power and dramatic footwork. Inspired by poetry, this show presents the flamenco superstar at her most elegant, emotive best. Accompanied by four dancers and her critically acclaimed ensemble of musicians she delivers an unforgettable tour de force performance, which has left Spanish audiences in raptures. Yerbabuena says that “Lluvia” (Rain) is “born on a gray day of pure melancholy,” and in it she has endeavored to explore her beginnings. She predicts that some people who believe they know her will feel a little uncomfortable although “Lluvia” reflects who really she is, her essence. This work “is a tribute to melancholy and coldness, to being alive, to the endlessness of life”.
