Famed for their annual Nutcracker, the acclaimed Rockville Civic Ballet's latest production boasts a trio of dances. The Last Duchess is inspired by an intriguing Robert Browning poem, in which a duke shows off a portrait of his wanton wife, insinuating that he's gotten rid of her for good. Also on the program are the works Saturday Night Social, a fun and entertaining romp set to Aaron Copland's Rodeo, and Danse D'Enesco, a folk dance-influenced piece that's described as bright and fast-moving. Eva Yerbabuena is famed for her speed, power and dramatic footwork. Inspired by poetry, this show presents the flamenco superstar at her most elegant, emotive best. Accompanied by four dancers and her critically acclaimed ensemble of musicians she delivers an unforgettable tour de force performance, which has left Spanish audiences in raptures. Yerbabuena says that “Lluvia” (Rain) is “born on a gray day of pure melancholy,” and in it she has endeavored to explore her beginnings. She predicts that some people who believe they know her will feel a little uncomfortable although “Lluvia” reflects who really she is, her essence. This work “is a tribute to melancholy and coldness, to being alive, to the endlessness of life”.
