Constellation Theatre Company presents Blood Wedding, a tragedy by Spanish dramatist Federico García Lorca. Written in the 1930s, the play takes place on the wedding day of an unnamed bride and groom. The Bride's ex-lover Leonardo turns up before the ceremony to confess that he still loves her, forcing her to choose between himself and her husband-to-be. Her fateful choice leads inevitably to tragedy as the conflict between personal desires and societal expectations plays itself out. The play incorporates song, chant, poetry, music, and rhythm, and its action and sets are highly symbolic. This is a play that must be seen rather than merely read in order to experience the full impact of its tragic beauty and stylized drama.

Parking is difficult in such a robust area. Metro is best. Stay for dinner at the local resturants

Death was pitchy. For a production that uses original music with repeating vocals, it is critical that a character charged with moving the narrative be able to sing in a cringe-free manner. He also needs to play to the smaller, more intimate space with more facial subtlety.

The acting is uneven, albeit sincere. The guitar music makes for good bookends. The production tries too hard to use and often does not succeed in using movement and music. I now need to go back to the text to see what Garcia Lorca intended.

Lorca would not be known as a great Spanish playwright based on this theater's translation and 'updating," with modern inner city idiom thrown in for good measure. I've seen much better community theatre - better acting, casting, directing, and singing. The acting was overly emotive and the directing heavy-handed. There was no intermission, so we couldn't escape. I haven't gone to too many plays that I wanted to walk out on, but this was one of them.

This is a well-acted production of a famous drama. And not at all depressing as the title suggests. Definitely worth seeing.

If you have any passion or admiration for Federico Garcia Lorca as a writer, do not see this production.

That being said, the set design is innovative for the space and budget and the guitar player is pitch-perfect...too perfect, in fact, to be part involved in the nightmare that is this show.
