For the 19th year in a row, the Kennedy Center welcomes an impressive list of veteran artists and rising stars for a two-night salute to "the lady who swings the band" -- noted jazz pianist, composer and arranger Mary Lou Williams. The first concert pays tribute to female performers with Patrice Rushen, singer-songwriter Toshi Reagon and drummer Allison Miller, and an exploration of Middle Eastern music with vocalist Somi. The second night features Trio 3 with a retrospective of Williams' music, along with sets from clarinet-sax player Anat Cohen and René Marie, singing cuts from her latest album. Called "perpetually contemporary" by none other than Duke Ellington, Mary Lou Williams recorded over 100 albums and composed and arranged for Ellington, Benny Goodman and Cab Calloway. This DC area modern company has been around 18 years, with award winning choreographer Lucy Bowen McCauley at the helm. Company dancers exemplify talent and training. Live music is always a plus. Two premieres were presented, the second "Timed Connections", I really liked. Otherwise, the program was generally a evening of pretty standard contemporary vocabulary and unmemorable. My first time seeing this company, and will see them again Mar 7. But, probably not much more.
This show is recommended for those age 8 or older.
