Before the creation of "South Park," and in the tradition of "Oklahoma" and "Friday the Thirteenth Part 2," Cannibal: The Musical was brought to life by first-time writer, director, Trey Parker using song and dance to tell the true story of America's only convicted cannibal, Colorado's own, Alferd Packer.
Cannibal! The Musical is the true story of the only person convicted of cannibalism in America - Alferd Packer (according to Colorado lore.) The sole survivor of an ill-fated trip to the Colorado Territory, he tells his side of the harrowing tale to news reporter Polly Pry as he awaits his execution. And his story goes like this: While searching for gold and love in the Colorado Territory, he and his companions lost their way and resorted to unthinkable horrors, including toe-tapping songs!
Nearly ten years after its original production, Cannibal: The Musical's legacy is beginning to resemble that of the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" or perhaps "The Producers!" Since Cannibal's theatrical debut in 1998, theater groups have been embracing the staged version of this cult musical. Thespians near and far have been adapting the original movie to stage with the accompaniment of live musicians, meanwhile, "Shadow Casts" have been performing live alongside the 35mm print of the film, in a "Rocky Horror" style.
This special late-night performance of “Cannibal! – The Musical” will feature a guest appearance by Lloyd Kaufman, president of Troma Entertainment. Troma distributed the original motion picture version of “Cannibal! – The Musical,” and is the home of The Toxic Avenger, among other bizarre cinematic heroes.
Also back by popular demand is the “Cannibal Raw Meat Giveaway,” in which some lucky audience member is selected at random for the unique and valuable gift of (free!) raw meat. To be true to the holiday season, Landless plans to offer authentic reindeer meat – prepared and frozen for easy transportation.
“When Landless exploits a gimmick, we do it all the way, or not at all,” explained Landless Theatre Company Artistic Director Andrew Lloyd Baughman, who adapted “Cannibal! – The Musical” for the stage from the Troma motion picture. “And what could be better than celebrating this festive time of year with as ancient and highly prized a source of sustenance as reindeer meat?”
“The rest of Santa’s team will just have to work a little harder this year, that’s all,” Baughman explained, pragmatically.
The meat will be refrigerated to proper USDA storage standards and will be completely edible when cooked, according to an unnamed Landless theatre spokesperson.
