What if the stiff-upper-lipped British colonials and oppressed natives in 19th century Africa had expressed their darkest fantasies? What if those same characters appeared in 1979 London, but found that despite all of the era's sexual liberation, they were far from heaven? Caryl Churchill's gender-bending farce about accepting people who are different has left audiences in stitches and tears for more than 30 years, and is now performed by the Georgetown Gilbert & Sullivan Society.

By the Way, Meet Vera Stark: Sly Satire Skewers Hollywood Racism

Full Price:
$43.00 - $55.00
Our Price:
$21.50 - $27.50

Set in Hollywood over a 70-year period, Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage's pseudo-biographical comedy By the Way, Meet Vera Stark follows the life of a headstrong African-American actress who begins a career in the 1930s, at a time when her only shot at success lay in stealing small scenes in big Hollywood blockbusters. Seventy years later, film buffs reflect on the life and legacy of the controversial star, whose eventual fame and fortune came at the price of perpetuating dangerous stereotypes. Nottage artfully blends comedy and social commentary for a thoroughly entertaining yet thought-provoking picture of the cultural climate that shaped Vera Stark. Clever and illuminating, this show draws on screwball films of the 1930s and uses today's fascination with celebrity and controversy to get to the truth behind the legend, and reflect on who she might have been if she'd lived in a different time. I'm not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't this. I think I was misled by the discription "award winning" & "laughing the whole way through". I laughed very little. The whole production was very amateur; from the person introducing it - reading from a piece of scrap paper, to the cast clothes that were torn and held up with safety pins. This was supposed to portray colonial Brits, there was no attempt to even sound like one. I maybe a little unfair at my judgement, this maybe the standard at which they operate, however, this is not a venue that I will visit again.

This is a thought provoking and earnestly staged production that because of its adult sexual themes and frequent use of the f-bomb may not be everyone's cup of tea. For those who wish to explore changing sexual boundaries and how the world has adapted to gay-lesbian themes, this is a most thought-provoking play. The casting is unusual to say the least and the production's acting accomplishments varied a great deal. But with the above caveats it is an interesting evening.

I found the acting quite lacking and dull. I was bored and left during intermission. I have gone to high school plays that were much more interesting and entertaining.

Description

Directed by Jonathan Zucker

Caryl Churchill's Obie-award winning carnivalesque satire, set first in 1879 Africa and then in 1979 London, follows the members of a British colonial family as they confront, manipulate, and unravel the absurdities of Victorian sexual and gender repression in the name of Queen and Country.

Due to adult language and themes, this show is not recommended for audience members younger than 13.
