It was amazingly good in the accurate portrayal of life in Liberia; ways of thinking about the world, the roll of women; mannerisms and accent. I was really surprised that the actors were not Liberians! Amazing acting.

The Liberian English was so strong that at times I had a hard time catching all of the words. This was distracting and detracted from the strong and important message.

I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia from 1988 to 1990. I was there when Taylor first came into the country. For several years after I left, I received regular letters from my students (mostly males) which contained lists of my students and other people who were killed in the war. The number is staggering. My students were children.

An all-around fantastic show! I was in the balcony, but I felt like I was seated right in the midst of these talented actresses. Very engaging, funny, and heartbreaking. Take a few tissues.

Very happy to have seen this play! The acting was smooth and spectacular! The story was heart-wrenching and well-told from beginning to end. This is a late review, I know, but if the Woolly Mammoth ever presents this production again, I highly recommend it.

Description

by Danai Gurira
directed by Liesl Tommy

featuring Company members Jessica Frances Dukes and Dawn Ursula with Uzo Aduba, Ayesha Ngaujah, and Liz Femi Wilson

"Danai Gurira demonstrated her remarkable talent as both an actor and playwright with In the Continuum, her award-winning hit (created with Nikkole Salter) that came to Woolly Mammoth in 2006. With Eclipsed, Danai steps onto a bigger canvas, painting a vivid portrait of five young Liberian women whose lives are enmeshed in civil war. Woolly is proud to launch this sharp-edged, surprisingly humorous, and emotionally powerful new play — which makes a universal statement about the impact of war and the resilience of individuals who forge a vision of the future in the face of the cruelest circumstances. Eclipsed will launch Woolly’s 30th season of plays about big topics and pressing conversations about the world we live in." – Howard Shalwitz, Artistic Director
