Acclaimed violinist Leila Josefowicz and choreographer Jessica Lang and her dance company join the National Symphony Orchestra to perform Pulitzer winner John Adams' Violin Concerto in the final program of the NEW MOVES: symphony + dance festival. Called "a master of visual composition" by Dance Magazine, Lang sets original choreography to Adams' melodic and colorful 1993 work. Josefowicz's playing has been described as being full of "zest and fiery personality" (Chicago Sun-Times) -- a perfect match for this expressive, breathless work. Also on the program are Aaron Copland's Pulitzer-winning masterpiece of pioneer life, Appalachian Spring; Michael Daugherty's Superman-inspired Red Cape Tango; and Sinfonia No. 4 ("Strands") by George Walker, the first African-American composer to win the Pulitzer. Trigger is a cross-disciplinary work that unfolds as a choreographed play where ordinary people have extraordinary lives. Human stories of strength, honor, family and triumph are revealed against a backdrop of some of the nation’s darkest moments. Trigger provides a look into the history of black gangsters: how they were unschooled yet successful; governed by principle rather than established rule; and how their actions mirror some of the very activity that America and our society were built upon. This project addresses issues of class and economic conditions, exposing the double standards of the differential treatment received by minorities.
Snapshots grew out of the initial research process for Trigger and showcases the extreme physicality and athleticism of EDT dancers.
