Two couples who've been vacationing together for 25 years party it up in Cancún, where a late-night revelation leads to a whole new reality once the sun comes up. GALA Hispanic Theatre launches its 39th season with the DC premiere of this cutting-edge comedy, written by award-winning Catalonian Jordi Galcerán (The Grönholm Method), and staged in Spanish with screen-projected English surtitles. The ensemble features Chani Martín, Luz Nicolás and Carlos Castillo, who appeared to acclaim in last season's Cabaret Barroco, and Maggie Bofill, who'll be making her GALA debut. Learn More

The setup - "girl vows never to fall in love then falls in love" presents the problem of making us believe. For instance Benedick's switch in Much Ado risks our perceiving him as a man of trivial conviction. What I loved about the production was the way Natalia Miranda-Guzman acts the transition of a woman determined to eschew love, but who then tumbles headlong into it. Of course Moreto's classic script provides the means, but Miranda-Guzman is wonderful, and the entire cast is outstanding. Well acted, well sung, well played. The only obstacle for me, with my minimal Spanish, was the problem they were having with the surtitles - sometimes out of sync and twice the operator had to go back and forth to get back on track. But the production is very good, especially for those with good Spanish.
