This was a real bust of an evening. The folk dancing was amateurish and not very interesting. The music was garbled by a bad sound system -- a boom box! The food was scant though delicious. The wine tasting amounted to about 4 different wines --not exactly a broad sampling.

When the food was served, a long line formed and then moved very slowly -- bad setup inside the cramped spaces of the Embassy.

Even at my half-priced Gold Star rate, I felt ripped off. Since this was advertised as a Singles event, I was disappointed that the number of people in my age range -- 40-50 -- was very small.

We left early.

I am so glad I went through Goldstar for this event, since I only paid $30 (half price). If I would have paid full price, I may have caused an international incident demanding my money back. This was WAY oversold. Open Wine Bar? Yes, with 2 varieties of red, and 1 white. Poured by the ounce in plastic cups. Costa Rican food? Yes -buffet style beans, chips, and rice with chicken, with only 4 inch plastic plates to work with. Folkloric style dancing? Yes, a few dances, to music played on a fisher price boom box that you couldn't hear unless you were within a 10 foot radius of it. We left after about an hour. I would not recommend this event, not for $60 (professionals in the city price) or $30 (goldstar price).

Was not worth the money! Dancing was ok, as they weren't professionals, but sound system was horrible.
Food was ok, but not enough and line very long.
Coffee, which is supposed to be a big sell for Costa Rica, was set up very poorly, they ran out of most flavors and had powder creamer.
I was surprised that they didn't even offer tours of the embassy, just sat us outside or in a small entry hallway and that was it. For $30 I expected something better.

Pros In the City Social Networking event held at the Costa Rica Embassy.
Gratis wine and soda bar. Brief opening remarks by Minister of Culture. Event was held in the small walled garden/courtyard of this small Embassy. Dance troop of three performed four simple folk costumed dances. The fourth was audience participation if desired. Dinner, buffet style, was basic but good. Rice with chicken, and pureed black beans. Video played on laptop promoting CR coffee production. Two coffees were available for sampling. The weather was perfect for being outside. The event was very nice. The attendees were friendly and represented a wide range of ages.
TIP: bring all email confirmation paperwork. Slow check in process resulted in a long slow line getting in - so go a few minutes early to establish yourself near the front of the line.

Description

When you think of Costa Rica, do you automatically think of the finest coffee beans in the world? While this is certainly true, during this extraordinary evening you’ll discover the many other wonders and heritage of this Central American republic. Costa Rica, which means “rich coast” in Spanish, was named by Christopher Columbus and his explorers, who expected to find gold here. Once a Spanish colony, Costa Rica gained its independence in 1821. Since that time, citizens of the world have discovered its lush interior, volcanic mountains, gorgeous beaches, and thriving economy through exportation of everything from coffee and bananas to computer chips!

Among European explorers, the first recorded visitor was Christopher Columbus in 1502. The natives he encountered wore golden disks around their necks. He called this new place “Costa Rica”, meaning “Rich Coast”, because he thought the gold came from there. The gold had actually come from other countries and had been obtained as a trade item from native traders along the coast.

Spanish treasure seekers eventually discovered their error and went elsewhere in their quest for gold. The irony is that Christopher Columbus actually picked the perfect name for our country. The wealth overlooked by the Spaniards is the rich biological diversity that includes more than half a million species of plants and wildlife! (More than 850 species of birds, 600 species of butterflies, 1200 species of orchids, and 237 species of mammals). While Costa Rica covers a mere 0.03 % of the planet’s surface (the size of West Virginia; a little more than 20.000 square miles), the nation is endowed with over 5% of all life forms on earth.

You’ll discover that the Embassy itself mirrors the loveliness and hospitality of Costa Rica with its design by famous architect Appleton P. Clark III in the Renaissance Revival style.
