Sgt. Pepper's Inspires New Pieces From Great Noise Ensemble
The Beatles' groundbreaking 1967 album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, one of the most influential works of the twentieth century, is still inspiring. Taught the Band to Play, a concert of brand new commissions that use the landmark album as a jumping off point, is the latest endeavor from Great Noise Ensemble, one of D.C.'s most exciting and ambitious ensembles. In creating each new piece, the composers drew inspiration from various elements found on Sgt. Pepper's, whether it be a rhythm figure, a mental image inspired by the lyrics, or the subtle suggestion of a melody. GNE continues to push the boundaries of contemporary music with these 13 new works by composers Matt Marks, Joshua Bornfield, Daniel Felsenfeld, Marc Mellits, Stephen Gorbos, Sean Doyle, Jonathan Russell, Ryan Brown, Geoffrey Gordon and GNE's own Armando Bayolo, Mark Sylvester and Blair Goins.
