AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME production. This show only flopped on Broadway because it was the wrong venue - but it's perfect for Landless!! The music is incredible and the entire production is near flawless. GO SEE THIS!!!!Written on Feb 22 2010

Good music and singing but could have used more musical references in the dialogue for music junkies.Written on Feb 26 2010

It was good. The actors were great. It just felt like it could have been a bit sillier... like the show was too serious. I'm not sure if the fault is with the script or this performance, but all in all - I'm glad I went!! I guess I'm used to absolute ridiculousness (in an awesome way) from Landless.Written on Feb 25 2010

Description
The Landless Theatre Company presents the DC Premiere of High Fidelity - A Musical (based on the Nick Hornby novel) to District of Columbia Arts Center. The music is by Tom Kitt (Tony Award-winning composer of Next to Normal), with lyrics by Amanda Green and book by David Lindsay-Abaire. The production stars Helen Hayes Award-Winning actor Stephen Gregory Smith (Signature’s 110 In The Shade, Kiss of the Spider Woman) as “Rob.”
In High Fidelity, A Brooklyn record shop owner in his thirties, Rob Gordon, is obsessed with making top five lists for everything, always observing rather than participating in life. When his girlfriend Laura leaves him, he goes through a painful re-evaluation of his life and lost loves (with a little help from his music) and he slowly learns that he has to grow up and let go of his self-centered view of the world before he can find real happiness.
The production is directed and choreographed by Julie Herber (Associate Artistic Director of Maryland Ensemble Theatre) with music direction by Charles Johnson (Landless’ Gutenberg! The Musical! and Walmartopia). Herber’s production transforms the entire DCAC venue into Hornby’s iconic record store with actor-musicians playing Kitt’s score.
The original 2006 New York production of High Fidelity closed after only fourteen performances. Landless’ DC premiere production is among the first ever of Kitt’s work. “I think that it was never meant to be a huge Broadway show. It was meant to be an Off-Broadway show, or to be done in a small intimate house,” said Stephen Gregory Smith. “And well, it doesn't get much more intimate than the DCAC... so anyone who wants to come and see it will see a totally intimate production.”
“I never got to see the original production, but I read a couple reviews predicting the work would have fared much better in a more ‘grungy’ and intimate venue that reflected the hipster atmosphere of the story,” said Producing Artistic Director Andrew Lloyd Baughman, who plays a supporting role made memorable by Jack Black in the Stephen Frears film. “We hope that is true, because this is it!”
The supporting cast of actor-musicians also includes Esther Covington, Mickey D. DaGuiso, Stefanie Garcia, Genevieve James, Tom Mallan, Momo Nakamura, Anya Audette Randall Nebel, Paul Pinkham, Juan Carlos Sanchez, Josh Speerstra and Karisssa Swanigan. Scenic design by Jared Davis. Costumes by Elizabeth Reeves. Lighting by Carey Rausch. Props and photography by Amanda Williams. Sound design by Nicholas Upchurch.
