A first-class performance in all regards. Melodramatic story enhanced by imaginative lighting, costumes, staging and fantastic singing by all the leads. Unusual opera not often performed. My orchestra seat was excellent so this was a great value also.

Winner of the 2007 Olivier Award for Best Opera
“There are some nights at the opera when director and designer, cast and conductor, composer and masterpiece coalesce into something so powerful, so affecting, so right as to transcend memories of the most vivid previous productions. Such is the thrilling case with David Alden’s new staging of Janácek’s Jenufa.” —The Observer (UK)
If you think the Italians have a lock on operatic passion, this Czech masterpiece will change your mind. A drama of betrayal, revenge, and an unspeakable crime committed in the name of morality, it demands a cast that acts as intensely as it sings.
Co-production with Houston Grand Opera and English National Opera.
Sung in Czech with English supertitles.
