Mozart's whimsical opera The Magic Flute springs to life via the Washington National Opera and vivid, colorful sets and costumes from Japanese-American artist Jun Kaneko. This adventure-filled opera begins as the Queen of the Night sends the brave Prince Tamino on a quest to rescue her daughter from an evil sorcerer. Accompanied by the clumsy and comical birdcatcher Papageno, Tamino braves all obstacles to find the princess and defeat the sorcerer, only to find that all is not what it seems. Tamino's adventure is marked by dramatic plot twists as trickery and betrayals are revealed, and the true villain emerges. This production is sung in English with projected English titles. Learn More

Winner of the 2007 Olivier Award for Best Opera
“There are some nights at the opera when director and designer, cast and conductor, composer and masterpiece coalesce into something so powerful, so affecting, so right as to transcend memories of the most vivid previous productions. Such is the thrilling case with David Alden’s new staging of Janácek’s Jenufa.” —The Observer (UK)
If you think the Italians have a lock on operatic passion, this Czech masterpiece will change your mind. A drama of betrayal, revenge, and an unspeakable crime committed in the name of morality, it demands a cast that acts as intensely as it sings.
Co-production with Houston Grand Opera and English National Opera.
Sung in Czech with English supertitles.
