Mozart's whimsical opera The Magic Flute springs to life via the Washington National Opera and vivid, colorful sets and costumes from Japanese-American artist Jun Kaneko. This adventure-filled opera begins as the Queen of the Night sends the brave Prince Tamino on a quest to rescue her daughter from an evil sorcerer. Accompanied by the clumsy and comical birdcatcher Papageno, Tamino braves all obstacles to find the princess and defeat the sorcerer, only to find that all is not what it seems. Tamino's adventure is marked by dramatic plot twists as trickery and betrayals are revealed, and the true villain emerges. This production is sung in English with projected English titles. Learn More

Outstanding singing, great music, nice production. All in all a revelation about a piece that is infrequently performed. Plot of the opera is somewhat silly, but that is not unusual for operas. One more performance (Mon. night, 11/17), so take advantage of it if you have a chance.
Renée Fleming, one of the greatest sopranos of our day, makes her WNO debut as the infamous Lucrezia Borgia, a role she shares with Sondra Radvanovsky.
Composed by Gaetano Donizetti
Libretto by Felice Romani
Sung in Italian with English supertitles.
The running time for this production is approximately two hours and 42 minutes including two 20-minute intermissions.
