Hailed as a modern masterpiece, Tim Rice & Andrew Lloyd Webber's Tony Award-winning musical Evita is now back in the nation's capital with a new Broadway touring production. Following the unforgettable true story of former Argentine first lady Eva Perón, Evita showcases its namesake lead's meteoric rise from the slums to the presidential mansion, where she became a champion of the poor and one of the most powerful women in the modern world. Caroline Bowman (Kinky Boots, Wicked, Spamalot) plays Eva, whose greed, outsized ambition and fragile health also made her story a tragic one. Featuring songs like "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" and "High Flying, Adored," this Evita production is directed by Michael Grandage (Red) and choreographed by Rob Ashford (Thoroughly Modern Millie), both Tony-winning artists. Outstanding singing, great music, nice production. All in all a revelation about a piece that is infrequently performed. Plot of the opera is somewhat silly, but that is not unusual for operas. One more performance (Mon. night, 11/17), so take advantage of it if you have a chance.
Renée Fleming, one of the greatest sopranos of our day, makes her WNO debut as the infamous Lucrezia Borgia, a role she shares with Sondra Radvanovsky.
Composed by Gaetano Donizetti
Libretto by Felice Romani
Sung in Italian with English supertitles.
The running time for this production is approximately two hours and 42 minutes including two 20-minute intermissions.
