This is the classic Washington walk. You’ll visit each of the city’s famous memorials: the Washington Monument, the World War II Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Abraham Lincoln Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial.
You’ll start with the big picture, just east of the Washington Monument, where the view stretches unencumbered over two miles in the city’s midst from Capitol to Lincoln Memorial. Then you’ll head toward the evening sun. Along the way, the guides set the scene for the Federal City’s original plans to memorialize its national heroes and how they’ve evolved with time. As you approach each memorial, you’ll hear its particular story and then have time to look around yourself. By dark you’ll be strolling the cherry-frocked shores of the Tidal Basin, watching the lights come up across the way.
