Dance Place presents its annual curated showcase of the best new works from established and emerging choreographers, New Releases. These works spotlight the ideas, techniques and rhythms that are helping to push dance forward. Some of the performances included in the showcase are: Akosua Akoto's Enwotwe, which fuses tradition and modernity to find a progressive way of life; Johnnie Mercer's the disappearing act., where the audience is guided into the deep corners of the human mind; and Briana Stuart's Am I Strong Enough, which tackles the Black female identity from the inside out. Quotes & Highlights
“…a technical exploration of the dynamic of speed, impact and close interaction…. made me think of hot sunlight and daring athletics.” —Daily News Record
Next Reflex Dance Collective presents Electro Shutdown & The Pea, an experience from within a night club that begins upon your arrival. Entering the theater, you will find the familiar Dance Place stage transformed into the new hot D.C. night club,“The Pea”.
Spectators participate in the action, waiting in line to enter the club, interacting with cocktail waitresses and club goers in the lobby, and then are placed in the thick of the concert scene. In this wild spectacle of a show, NRDC performers represent an array of club goers and give an inside view to various scenarios found in a night club from the funny and absurd to the romantic and frenetic. The evening closes with a live musical performance by Electro Shutdown and an open dance floor.
