The breath-taking candlelit sanctuary of the historic Dumbarton Church is the magical setting for the sounds of Nordic Voices, Norway's innovative a cappella vocal ensemble. This world-famous six-member group's repertoire ranges from ancient works to new, contemporary pieces. This performance, in fact, spans five centuries of sacred music. In the first half of this concert, they'll sing sixteenth-century European lamentations from de Victoria, Palestrina and others, while the second half, Consolation, offers compositions from their countrymen Kværno, Sløgedal and more.

I was hoping to hear more contemporary pieces. The first half of the show was all traditional pieces which, of course, were well done, but were performances of "church" type music. The contemporary numbers came after the intermission. They were fabulous.

Remarkable a capella group of 6 voices, both singing Renaissance music as well as modern Nordic songs. Unique experience.

Description

Step into the candlelit sanctuary and prepare to be “carried away” by the other-worldly beauty of this six-voice a capella ensemble in a program of luminous settings of lamentations from Palestrina and Victoria to Robert White - Elizabeth I’s Master of Choristers.  The sheer emotional intensity of this music sung by Norway’s leading vocal ensemble will melt away your everyday cares by the time the candles are extinguished and the last notes of Gesualdo’s glorious Misesere are sung in enveloping darkness.
