Scena Theatre presents Kenneth Branagh's drama Public Enemy, starring acclaimed stage and screen actor Barry McEvoy. Inspired by the 1931 Warner Bros. film that launched the career of James Cagney, Branagh's play is set in Belfast during the 1980s rivalry between Catholic and Protestant paramilitaries. Young Tommy Black wins a talent contest by impersonating Jimmy Cagney's gangster from the film, and soon begins to lose sight of the line between fantasy and reality.

The lead actor Barry McEvoy was fantastic. He was so intense at times I was almost afraid to be in the audience. The police officer character was also excellent. The only downside was that the Irish accents sometimes made it difficult to actually hear the lines.

Good, not outstanding. Went on Friday night and was surprised by the small audience. Nice little theater. I hope it thrives. Well acted - particularly the lead.

I'm constantly amazed at the calibre of theatre available in the D.C. area. The performance of Public Enemy at the H Street Playhouse is an example of Washington theatre at its best - thought-provoking play and excellent acting in an intimate setting. It was an enjoyable and entertaining performance, and I recommend it highly.
