The newest drama by legendary playwright Tom Stoppard, Rock 'n' Roll chronicles the rise of democracy -- and rock music -- in Soviet-dominated Czechoslovakia during the 1960s and '70s. Sophisticated, funny and electrifying, the play follows the passions and politics of a Marxist professor in Cambridge and his Rolling Stones-obsessed protégé fighting for freedom in Prague.

This highly visual, retro-sci-fi performance tells the story of Astro Boy and his creator Osamu Tezuka, who is admired as "the God of Manga" in his native Japan. The comic was created during Japan's post-war era as an embodiment of a peaceful use of nuclear energy. This play combines Tezuka's life, the history of Japanese animation and the fictional world of Astro Boy, a crime-fighting boy robot. It is a high/low-tech multimedia extravaganza, featuring on-stage drawing, interactive video and 1960s-style animation. Learn More

my husband and i thoroughly enjoyed this play--first the choice of the smaller theatre at studio so that attendees would be able to concentrate on the dialog. stoppard is brilliant--i have seen several of his plays and have always appreciated him but rock and roll was the best for me so far. the cast was also terrific. ironic to watch this play on june 21 when there are demonstrations in tehran as there were at the time of this play. the theatre is great and the staff is wonderful. i would give the play, the author, the cast and the theatre and staff 4 stars.

Brilliant acting in a heady, philosophical piece that is not inaccessible but certainly requires one's absolute attention over the course of the evening in order to be appraciated. Ted van Griethuysen is Washington's finest actor and he offers an absolutely tremendous performance in "Rock 'n Roll." Go see it!

I enjoyed the play, but . . . My wife and I try to take our pre-teen son to theatre as much as possible. I was not aware of what language would be used in the play, specifically that it includes language that is not appropriate for pre-teens. It would have been nice to be fore warned.

Generally well done. Some actors better than others, and some could have enunciated more clearly, especially given the intellectual density and verbal acrobatics of this (and all) Stoppard plays. Would not have hurt to have read this play in advance... Demanding, but enjoyable.
