Roomful of Teeth: Vocal Octet Shows What the Human Voice Can Do
Deliberately choosing an image that's both whimsical and bit scary for their name, the vocal octet Roomful of Teeth wants everyone to know that they're not your typical vocal ensemble. Led by conductor, composer, and singer Brad Wells, this group of artists has scoured the world for the most extreme and unusual vocal traditions they could find, from yodeling to Inuit throat singing and beyond. Then they take all of these vocal techniques and collaborate with today's brightest composers to create a vibrant and experimental musical repertoire that will expand your perception of what the human voice is capable of doing. Combining different noises, chants and sound combinations, the group sometimes creates sounds you've never heard before, while other times they bring forth familiar and beautiful sound images with their voices, like rain on a window or the unintelligible murmur of a crowded room. Winners of the 2010 American Prize Time Out New York Critic's Pick and lauded by NPR and Pitchfork Media, Roomful of Teeth brings together world music, classical music and and indie/alternative vibe for a vibrant new sound that brings audiences to their feet.
