Spring Awakening is an awesome rock musical and Broadway smash that won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. Based on the Expressionist play that caused a scandal in 19th-century Germany, this poignant musical follows a group of teenagers as they navigate the confusing and often troubled waters of adolescence, complicated by their budding sexuality. Inspired by Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 play, the musical's angst, emotion, desire and romance still ring true today, and its acclaimed score by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater turns this timeless story into a powerful coming-of-age rock musical. The Keegan Theatre's production is directed by two-time Helen Hayes nominees Susan Marie Rhea and Mark A. Rhea. Learn More

Eddie was a good actor most of the time, the rest were decent but not outstanding. It is a worthwhile play if you like one that is intensely dramatic throughout, but I would not say it is a must-see.Written on Oct 25 2010

I enjoyed the gritty set design. It looked like the rundown hotel room that I imagined for the story. The acting was good, though the character "Mae" was not very convincing at times. As one reviewer mentioned, she seemed to substitute "shrill" for passion at times. The story requires the two main characters (Billy and Mae) to portray almost instantaneous changes in personality. In the performance I saw, they did not always accomplish this well.Written on Nov 05 2010
As others have mentioned, this is a 60-minute, one act play. While I always respect the craft of theater and respect the art of acting, I was glad I did not pay full-price for this show.

Loud, nasty and boring. Great, because it was so short in length.Written on Oct 22 2010

Outstanding acting was clearly the highlight of this taut, intense, 65 minute drama by Sam Shepard (worth every dollar). As always at this cozy theater - not a bad seat in the house. And if you want great theater at 8 PM and good dining by 9:15 PM you can't beat this play right near the Dupont Circle area. Enjoy!!Written on Oct 18 2010

Quotes & Highlights
- "Powerful, compelling, and twisted, this love story is truly gripping ... a strong production by The Keegan Theatre. Director Colin Smith manages to blend the slight supernatural element with the strange naturalism by ensuring the characters are alive and kicking at all times ..." —The Evening Echo (Cork, Ireland)
- "Few writers manage to elevate higher than the sensationalism of confessional drama, but Shepard’s allegory for his own loss and love rises above and provides us with an intensely powerful personal drama that draws us in with its manic depiction of ill-fated love ... Fool For Love sees Keegan’s Mark Rhea reprise the role of star-crossed lover Eddie from the 2000 staging of the play and, speaking ahead of the play’s visit to Galway this month, he reflected on the experience of revisiting the role 10 years after he first essayed it ..." —Galway Advertiser (Galway, Ireland)
Description
Fool for Love is directed by Colin Smith and features Kevin Adams, Larissa Gallagher, Mark A. Rhea, and K. J. Thorarinsson.
A critical and popular success, this masterfully constructed work brings searing intensity and rare theatrical excitement to its probing -- yet sharply humorous -- study of love, hate and the dying myths of the American West. Eddie and May, who have loved and hated each other, find themselves in a stark, low-rent motel room on the edge of the Mojave Desert. Unable to hold on or let go, they battle to keep from drowning together. This Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright’s masterpiece shows the heights and depths that love can take us to, ultimately making fools of us all.
Fool for Love recently toured overseas as Keegan’s 12th annual Ireland tour production
