The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra pays tribute to the legendary William "Count" Basie with Count Basie Swings, Joe Williams Sings. Baritone jazz vocalist Joe Williams got his big break in 1954 when he was hired by the award-winning Count Basie Orchestra. By the following year he had reinvigorated the popularity of the band with the success of his signature song, "Every Day I Have the Blues" from the Count Basie Swings, Joe Williams Sings album. Led by artistic and musical director David N. Baker, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra presents this and other great songs of the era, and also pays tribute to Basie's longtime lead trumpeter, Snooky Young. Learn More

Fantastic concert with outstanding musicians. Royce was amazing in channeling Wes. This auditorium is great, too; the sound is perfect and there's not a bad seat in the room.Written on Apr 17 2012

I was a little disappointed that they found it necessary to have just about all white musicians to do the music of Wes Montgomery, the lead guitarist was mediocre at best there are others who could have done a much better jobWritten on Apr 17 2012

Description
Wes Montgomery began his ascent to fame following a two-year stint (1948-50) with Lionel Hampton’s orchestra. Considered by many to be without peer among modern jazz guitarists, Wes—along with several others—put the guitar on the map as a bebop/post-bop instrument. The SJMO small group performs classic Wes Montgomery selections, including “Four on Six,” “Unit 7,” and “West Coast Blues.”
The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO) was founded in 1990 with an appropriation from Congress in recognition of the importance of jazz and its status as a national treasure. Now in the seventh year of its series with The Smithsonian Associates, the orchestra, which has been hailed by music critics for its vitality, ensemble work, and outstanding soloists, delves into jazz’s greatest works and performers. The orchestra is led by artistic and musical director David N. Baker.
