The Gallerist: Art, Love, Passion and a Spiteful Monkey in New Play
- Full Price:
- $25.00

Washington's own Rorschach Theatre company presents the bizarre new drama The Gallerist at Atlas Performing Arts Center. Penned by award-winning playwright Fengar Gael (The Island of No Tomorrows, Opaline, Devil Dog Six), The Gallerist finds a British-born gallerist in a Manhattan jail cell. There, he recounts the sordid tale of how he came to be charged with assault and vagrancy -- all thanks, in the end, to a spiteful monkey. With a plot that travels from modern-day Manhattan to a recent-past pet shop in London, the play touches on the power of art, the futility of unrequited love and the effects of repressed passion, all while drawing inspiration from the likes of Othello, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Picture of Dorian Gray. The rennovated theater is really nice; however, the seating left something to be desired. The row I was sitting in and the one directly in front of it were both on the same level, not staggered. Thus, I got a great view of the guy's head in front of me and in the middle of the screen. Plus, the drunk, loud, and obnoxious guy two seats down from me wasn't helping matters much.Written on Sep 03 2010

A fun way to beat the heat at the cool Atlas. The people working there are lots of fun and they create a very welcoming atmosphere. As noted, you can bring in food. Their snack bar offers beer, wine and nibbles at great prices. Come! Bring your friends!Written on Jul 17 2010

This event was great! The theatre is gorgeous inside, and there were sofas, plenty of chairs, cabaret-style tables and chairs, and blankets to sit on. They sell wine, beer, soda and snacks but you're encouraged to bring your own in and some H Street restaurants (e.g. Dangerously Delicious Pies) give discounts if you want to take their take-out in. The staff were all super-friendly too. Pretty nice night out for $3 each.Written on Jul 09 2010

Description
Thursdays this summer at the Atlas Performing Arts Center will be Gay 101 – a series of films one must see to be a card-carrying gay man. While most are not gay-themed, all are embraced by the gay and lesbian community. Classics such as All About Eve, and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? will share the screen with campier choices including Mommie Dearest and Valley of the Dolls.
The films will be screened in the Sprenger Theatre, the Atlas’ largest black box space. Cabaret-style seating will be available, but audiences will be welcome to bring a lawn chair, a blanket or a stroller much like an outdoor movie festival. Beer, wine and snacks will be available or patrons are invited to bring a picnic instead. “We want the Atlas to be a fun destination for the Capitol Hill and H Street Northeast community this summer. We like to think of it as an indoor version of an outdoor movie festival.” said Scott Kenison, Chief Operating Officer of the Atlas. “Only our festival will have air conditioning and best of all, no mosquitoes!”
Schedule:
July 1 Breakfast at Tiffany's
July 8 Auntie Mame
July 9 Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
