Canadian pianist and former child prodigy Angela Hewitt may be best known for her nine-year recording project featuring a complete cycle of Bach's major keyboard works, but for her National Symphony Orchestra debut, she'll perform Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 22. As heard in the award-winning film Amadeus, that diverse work includes difficult solos and a lively finale that's book-ended by a poignant minuet. Conductor David Zinman leads the NSO through another famous film theme as well, Strauss' Also sprach Zarathustra, so compellingly used in Stanley Kubrick's ground-breaking 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Terakaft concert at the Maison Francaise was a fantastic experience. With the first act, Cheick Hamala Diabate, the south of Mali was represented with wonderful african rhythms that got the crowd out of their seats dancing more than once. From the north, Terakaft, with their swirling desert sand cadences, gave an almost hypnotic performance with their nomadic saharan interpretation of the electric blues. Good stuff!

Very nice performance. It was unfortunate that two of their band members were unable to make the trip. The modest-sized crowd gave these musicians a warm welcome. This was the band's first-ever trip into the USA. Cheick Hamala Diabate and his band...continued
