The oldest surviving animated film, 1926's The Adventures of Prince Achmed is a stunning work by German artist Lotte Reiniger, who used a silhouette technique with manipulated cutouts to create the illusion of movement. Based on stories from 1001 Arabian Nights, the film features many familiar elements, including Aladdin, magic lamps and flying horses. The live score will be performed by award-winning composer Tom Teasley, whose innovative blend of world music is based on his collaborations with indigenous musicians from Bahrain, Iraq and Saudi Arabia during his work as a cultural envoy with the U.S. State Department. Experience this slice of cinematic history for an enchanting night of entertainment.

The cartoons/figures/moving pictures were VERY clever. The "live score" was innovative, and clever, but in parts too loud for me, and not always relevant to the film, in my judgment. A good idea, and VERY worth while to see.

It was one of the most interesting performances I've ever seen. Lotte Reiniger's 1926 film was beautiful and surprisingly sensitive for silhouettes. It's hard to believe so much emotion could come out of something so simple. The artwork really held up well. And the music was incredible. The percussion was a lot more than "just" drums. Tom Teasley has created a truly international sound. He also expressed many moods. He is very talented. I enjoyed the Q&A with him after the performance as well. He is local, but had not heard of him before. I will definitely go hear him again.

This was such an enchanting evening! The film was so interesting in its technique. As a silent film fan, I had seen Prince Achmed before on TCM but to see it on a larger screen and especially with the live musical accompaniment was fabulous! Tom Teasley did a wonderful job of creating a score that enhanced the experience. Glad we stayed for the discussion afterwards as Mr. Teasley discussed his instruments and creative process.

What a great event. The movie was great and the one man orchestra was astonishing.
