Tony Award-Winning Musical Spring Awakening by Keegan Theatre

Full Price:

Spring Awakening is an awesome rock musical and Broadway smash that won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. Based on the Expressionist play that caused a scandal in 19th-century Germany, this poignant musical follows a group of teenagers as they navigate the confusing and often troubled waters of adolescence, complicated by their budding sexuality. Inspired by Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 play, the musical's angst, emotion, desire and romance still ring true today, and its acclaimed score by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater turns this timeless story into a powerful coming-of-age rock musical. The Keegan Theatre's production is directed by two-time Helen Hayes nominees Susan Marie Rhea and Mark A. Rhea. Learn More

This one-man performance was so well acted that I was emotionaly exhausted when it was over. I'm usually offended by the frequent use of the f-word in Irish plays, but its use in this play is an essential part of the story. I told Director Kerry (also actor's wife) that "The Atheist" is a misleading title that could be keeping people away, as it almost did me. She said it was the playwrite's choice. I suggested that they add in parentheses (Crow With One Eye Closed). The atheist's girlfriend;s landlord Senator's relationship with his wife is similar to that of Senator Larry Craig. I highly recommend seeing this play!

This play was fantastic, emotional and intriguing. The actor realizes an incredible performance and the story is both hillarious and sad. I am glad they extended the play for one more week. I highly recommend it.

Description

The Keegan Theatre’s new island project will make its Church Street Theater debut with the regional premiere of The AtheistThe Atheist, a one-man play written by Ronan Noone, features Eric Lucas and is directed by new island project’s artistic director Kerry Waters Lucas.

Mr. Lucas plays Augustine Early, a suave, compromised, washed-up celebrity journalist who blustered his way out of a trailer-park childhood in Blue Rapids, Kan., bent on fame and self-destruction.  He discovers dirt on a Congressman, controls the story, and in turn destroys the politician’s career and life.  Brash, hysterical, and "in your face," this one-hander begs the question, "To what lengths would you go to be famous?"  In The Atheist, Noonan’s writing has shifted to American subjects after a series of Irish ensemble plays that kicked off his career in Boston.

Keegan’s new island project is dedicated to producing Irish works in minimal settings, and for 2009-2010, will perform Saturday matinees and Sunday-Wednesday nights at the Church Street Theater.  The Keegan Theatre is in its 12th year as a D.C.-based professional theatre company and in its first season as a full-time resident at Church Street Theater.
