Five generations of a single family return to the same table at a Midwestern restaurant at various points over the course of 80 years, experiencing love, loss, and life in Dan LeFranc's comic drama. The story flows quickly from the initial meeting of a young couple, Nicole and Sam, through their firsts -- date, fight and kiss. Once they're married with children, they're faced with a son and a daughter who'd rather be anywhere than at The Big Meal, along with the worsening dementia of Sam's father. And as the years pass, life's ebbs and flows are experienced together, revealing more surprises, both happy and heartbreaking. Johanna Gruenhut directs this new play by the award-winning Dan LeFranc (Sixty Miles to Silver Lake) as part of the Studio Theatre's 2ndStage series.

Amy Herzog's 4,000 Miles is a play about the distances (both vast and surprisingly short) that can separate generations. Setting out on a cross-country bike trip, 21-year-old Leo crashes at his grandmother's Greenwich Village apartment. As his overnight stay stretches into a longer engagement, Leo realizes he has more in common with his leftist grandmother than perhaps either would care to admit. This forceful, literate drama, directed by Joy Zinoman, compassionately explores the relationship between a grandson who can't face his life and a grandmother who is starting to forget her own. Play itself is not that substantial a "meal," but the production was well done and worth seeing.

I found this deeply moving, and unexpectedly so. One of the best ensemble performances I've seen. Sorry the production has closed--I would have wanted to send people to it.
