The Studio Theatre presents the U.S. premiere of The Golden Dragon by Roland Schimmelpfennig, Germany's most-produced playwright. Spreading from the kitchen of a pan-Asian fast food restaurant, the play weaves together the various lives from the front and back of the restaurant. An undocumented worker's DIY tooth extraction leads to a stewardess surprised by a tooth in her soup, and these connections proliferate, revealing the dark truths that lay just below the bustle of daily life. The play is distinctly modernist, playing with dramatic conventions. The players narrate their actions before enacting them, and the capable ensemble plays characters of different ages, genders, races--and even species--than themselves.

The play was poorly written, severely limiting the actors' success with the audience. Several of the actors were outstanding, but the play was a total waste of time. The symbols were vague and, whether intended or not, the different elements were never connected very well. If this is theater of the absurd, then the actions should have been more fascinating on the face of it. In the end, one is left with little to take away or remember.

If the playwright is the most produced in Germany, then perhaps his most successful play to date should have been mounted by Studio. As it is, one is left with a very low opinion of this playwright.

Direction, acting, staging, pacing all excellent. The problem is the play itself, which I found too simplistic and heavy-handed... Congratulations to the Studio for taking it on!

Very interesting play about the German psyche. The Chinese, Taiwanese restaurant is in a way a venue to describe the lonely, unhappy "owners" of the land. the acting is superb. Be prepared to see 4-5 intertwined stories and actors switching roles in a maddening tempo.

Amazing show, beautifully acted, masterfully directed. A remarkable ride from humor to pathos. You'll still be talking about this days after you see it.

Description

The Golden Dragon
by Roland Schimmelpfennig
directed by Serge Seiden

This play by one of Germany's most innovative and adventurous writers unfolds in brief and fierce comic scenes. Five actors cross age, race and gender to play sixteen characters in this vicious, poetic and surprisingly moving investigation of how intertwined our lives really are.

In the cramped kitchen of The Golden Dragon, a pan-Asian restaurant, a young Chinese cook—the new one, the one who's looking for his sister—has a toothache. The orders keep flying as he screams in the kitchen, knitting the customers' lives together in a mix of fried rice noodles, steamed dumplings and pineapple-peach chicken.

The other four cooks pull their coworker's tooth using some schnapps and a spare set of pliers. His tooth ends up in the Thai soup of an exhausted flight attendant. In the apartment building above her, a young couple fight and eat takeout, while another man escapes from his apartment to the restaurant below to avoid watching his wife move out. The same man ends up drinking with the shopkeeper of the dry goods store next door to the restaurant, who is more connected to the young Chinese man than anyone suspects. Dark, funny and startling, Schimmelpfennig's play traces the isolation and unexpected connections of a globalized world.
