Tony Award-Winning Musical Spring Awakening by Keegan Theatre

Full Price:
$40.00
Our Price:
$20.00

Spring Awakening is an awesome rock musical and Broadway smash that won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. Based on the Expressionist play that caused a scandal in 19th-century Germany, this poignant musical follows a group of teenagers as they navigate the confusing and often troubled waters of adolescence, complicated by their budding sexuality. Inspired by Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 play, the musical's angst, emotion, desire and romance still ring true today, and its acclaimed score by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater turns this timeless story into a powerful coming-of-age rock musical. The Keegan Theatre's production is directed by two-time Helen Hayes nominees Susan Marie Rhea and Mark A. Rhea. Learn More

This play is held together by our hopeless romantic hero Ben. A typical youth, whose own urges and dreams collide to create quite a complex romantic dilemma, Ben weaves through the familiar story with a strong head, but a jumpy body. He kind of reminds me of Michael Cera in his delivery, tone and look (and that's not a bad thing). The rest of the cast is high-lighted by the two father characters who really deliver. Be ready for some shouting matches, ample nudity and a roller-coaster of jealousy, lust and even some love.

There were four in our party and we all thought the acting was outstanding, especially Benjamin and Mrs. Robertson. The set designer gets 4 gold stars also. Amazing what can be done with so little space. However, none of us understood the significance of the motel scene at the end of the play.

The play was well done with an excellent cast. The experience was marred by the fact that it started late and we were offered no explanation. With a long intermission it made for a late night.
