Shakespeare saved his best for last: his final play, The Tempest, is his most magical and engrossing tale. It follows the adventures of Prospero, an exiled duke who lives as the master of an enchanted isle abounding with fantastical creatures, mystery, music and romance. When a shipwreck delivers Prospero's enemies to the island, the plot thickens as his beloved daughter falls for one of the castaways. Bring a lawn chair and a picnic basket and enjoy this outdoor production from the Olney Theatre Center at the Root Family Stage. In celebration of the 65th anniversary of the National Players -- OTC's touring company of young professional actors -- celebrated National Player "veterans" will compose half the cast while current company members will take the younger roles. An extraordinary performance! I was transported back in time. Everything about this production was perfect. There is not better way to understand history than to experience a superb performance bring it to life. Congratulations to all who made this event possible.

Over the course of seven debates, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas tackled the hot topics of their day: state’s rights, slavery and the intent of the Constitution. The Rivalry captures the fiery rhetoric and wry humor of those debates, while adding the insights of Douglas’s wife, Adele. As Lincoln and Douglas race for the chance to be U.S. Senator, Adele reexamines her own concepts of freedom. Ford’s Theatre Director of Theatre Programming Mark Ramont directs Robert Parsons as Abraham Lincoln, Helen Hayes Award winner Rick Foucheux and Sarah Zimmerman (The Matchmaker).
