This was one of the best things I've ever seen on stage; it was like grand opera in ballet form.Written on Jun 26 2009

Choreographed in the mid-70's by Kenneth MacMillan for the Royal Ballet, Manon features fresh classical choreography with emotion-laden innovative pas de deux. It feels new even 30 years after its creation. It creates the atmosphere and portrays some of the themes in Les Miserable, the musical, but interestingly pre-dates that production. Manon puts the story in story ballet.Written on Jun 26 2009
Carlos Acosta's fans voiced their approval before he stepped into his first powerful arabesque across the stage. Tamara Rojos was a lovely, captivating Manon whose amazing feet floated her on undulating bourree -- the best that we have seen. Fantastic Acosta-Rojos partnering and solid acting by the whole company, including supers.
Be aware if you plan to take children, that while artistically done, there are depictions of murder, pedophilia, prostitution, and unwanted advances.
It is truly a treat to welcome the Royal Ballet back to DC after three years.

Quotes & Highlights
- "Astonishing…theatrical vitality. With Manon, The Royal Ballet triumphantly demonstrates that it remains one of the world's great companies." --New York Times
Description
A cautionary tale full of deadly sins, the ballet follows a beautiful young woman whose plan to run away with a handsome student--and with money stolen from her would-be suitor--ultimately turns disastrous. Whisking its doomed lovers from a moonlit Parisian courtyard to a high-society brothel and finally to the gritty streets and swamps of New Orleans, Manon "remains an irresistible combination of immorality, opulence, suffering, and tears" (Financial Times).
Choreography by Kenneth MacMillan
