Tony Award-Winning Musical Spring Awakening by Keegan Theatre

Spring Awakening is an awesome rock musical and Broadway smash that won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. Based on the Expressionist play that caused a scandal in 19th-century Germany, this poignant musical follows a group of teenagers as they navigate the confusing and often troubled waters of adolescence, complicated by their budding sexuality. Inspired by Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 play, the musical's angst, emotion, desire and romance still ring true today, and its acclaimed score by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater turns this timeless story into a powerful coming-of-age rock musical. The Keegan Theatre's production is directed by two-time Helen Hayes nominees Susan Marie Rhea and Mark A. Rhea. Learn More

This production hit just the right balance between performance and concept. It is a testament to this (new?) theatre company that these six short plays, loaded with stunning imagery and performed by a first rate cast, did not adhere to traditional methods of story-telling. As a result, I was challenged and rewarded with a thrilling, dream-like evening of theatre; a New York City theatre experience right here in DC.Written on Oct 01 2010

I totally like the acting. Speakings are not very easy to follow, but this didn't hinder me a little from getting deeply involved into the atmosphere. The best play I've seen in the past one year.Written on Oct 08 2010

A challenging piece. Visually stunning. Engaging throughout. Could it have been shorter? Maybe. Was it, at times, a little self-indulgent? Yes. But the ensemble cast was magnificent and the design elements employed outstanding. The puppets made me weep. Bravo! Definitely worth attending. A unique theatrical experience, this is the type of production that DC audience need to seek out and support. Young companies challenging themselves to produce this type of work is what makes our town a first rate theatre town.Written on Oct 08 2010

Description
Factory 449: a theatre collective, coming off the success of its award-winningp production of Sarah Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis, begins Season 2 (2010-11) with The Saint Plays by Erik Ehn, directed by John Moletress.
A mobile home in Albuquerque, a housing project in Lower Manhattan, a country torn apart by civil war, a classroom at a Santa Clara university… Here The Saints will make themselves known.
At the intersection between life and death, hope and suffering, loss and redemption, we enter the world of mystical storytelling, a theatrical journey that re-imagines the historical lives of the saints in a contemporary landscape. A selection of six short plays, including two world premieres written especially for the Factory 449 cycle, bring to life Erik Ehn’s fairy tales for the stage.
