With the words stripped out and telling Shakespeare's greatest stories solely through physicality and movement, Synetic presents the eighth installment of its Silent Shakespeare series, The Taming of the Shrew. Synetic's Helen Hayes Award-winning ensemble performs this fiery romantic comedy in an updated context, setting it in a Hollywood-style environment of fame and glamour. Company member Irina Tsikurishvili plays the title character of Kate, and Ryan Sellers is her modern-day Petruchio. Can Kate and her sister, Bianca, find love in a world of people struggling to see past their egos?

By the Way, Meet Vera Stark: Sly Satire Skewers Hollywood Racism

Full Price:
$43.00 - $55.00
Our Price:
$21.50 - $27.50

Set in Hollywood over a 70-year period, Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage's pseudo-biographical comedy By the Way, Meet Vera Stark follows the life of a headstrong African-American actress who begins a career in the 1930s, at a time when her only shot at success lay in stealing small scenes in big Hollywood blockbusters. Seventy years later, film buffs reflect on the life and legacy of the controversial star, whose eventual fame and fortune came at the price of perpetuating dangerous stereotypes. Nottage artfully blends comedy and social commentary for a thoroughly entertaining yet thought-provoking picture of the cultural climate that shaped Vera Stark. Clever and illuminating, this show draws on screwball films of the 1930s and uses today's fascination with celebrity and controversy to get to the truth behind the legend, and reflect on who she might have been if she'd lived in a different time. Bravi! Clever and entertaining, with quality performances across the board. Not entirely true to the original version, but unlike many of the Bard's finest, "Taming of the Shrew" is not exactly a timeless tale. Synetic did a reasonable adaptation of a story that most would now find offensive.

Yeah, another hit by Synetic Theater! Very modern and hip, with an uber-cool motorcycle and partial nudity! Every actor strutts their stuff with confidence and conviction, comfortable with the demanding choreography and fight scenes. Original music sets the mood and the pace. Beautiful and multi-useful sets double as wall/door and painter's canvas.

This was the funniest, fastest DANCE performance based on Shakespeare that i have seen. All my high school Shakespeare came back to me 50 years later. Great show. Too bad we were at the last performance because now i can't tell my friends.
