Spring Awakening is an awesome rock musical and Broadway smash that won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. Based on the Expressionist play that caused a scandal in 19th-century Germany, this poignant musical follows a group of teenagers as they navigate the confusing and often troubled waters of adolescence, complicated by their budding sexuality. Inspired by Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 play, the musical's angst, emotion, desire and romance still ring true today, and its acclaimed score by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater turns this timeless story into a powerful coming-of-age rock musical. The Keegan Theatre's production is directed by two-time Helen Hayes nominees Susan Marie Rhea and Mark A. Rhea. Learn More

Goldstar describes this play as a comedy. Far from it. The back of the playbill describes this play as 'grey', a minimalist approach to playwriting. Right on. This play is full of meandering monologues, no set changes, no music and uninteresting dialogue. If that's what they are looking for, they found it. The house was 1/4 full, and we almost left at intermission. I should have had more Smithwicks perhaps.Written on Jun 22 2010

It was boring and just plain uninteresting. The acting was okay but the plot was confusing and boring. It was a waste of 16 bucks. I feel bad for those who paid 25 bucks.Written on Jun 23 2010

I found the Irish brogue a big hurdle in enjoying this play. The acting, with the exception of a minor part, was superb and the staging was fine. I believe the lines were poetic and eloquent but unfortunately, the cast strove for and attained true authenticity and kept me from understanding the poetry. SGWritten on Jun 21 2010

Quotes & Highlights
- “Could easily have been titled 'These Are Little Masterpieces'... Barry gathers all the bewildered exasperation that Irish playwrights from Tom Murphy to Marina Carr and Enda Walsh have identified, and brings it, most brilliantly, to his dark, blackly hilarious and horrifically realistic narratives." --Irish Times
Description
The Keegan Theatre’s new island project presents the American premiere of There Are Little Kingdoms by Kevin Barry, a play that observes a day in the life of an unnamed Irish town. There Are Little Kingdoms is a comic cruise through a magical world of pool-hall legends, wife-swapping Casanovas, fast girls and faster cars, prescription drugs, shoulders dislocated by love, and windscreens smashed below in the square – not to mention the taxi-driver who can tell you how you'll die or the quare fella running the chipper who does a savage turn at Roy Orbison.
This is Under Milk Wood for the Irish Badlands circa 2008, a bittersweet comedy of misfits and losers, fantasists and sexy young psychopaths all leaping off the pages of Barry's 2007 Rooney prize-winning book of stories. In this sparkling adaptation, the stories cut across and swirl around one another as a series of scenes, monologues and songs contributing to a night of killer "turns."
Seven actors, co-directed by Eric Lucas and Kerry Waters Lucas, will bring the myriad of characters in Barry’s little kingdoms to life. There Are Little Kingdoms features Kyztov Lindquist, Drew Kopas, Allan Jirikowic, Bill McKinney, Megan Thrift, Suzanne Watts, Eric Lucas and Kerry Waters Lucas.
