Shakespeare Theatre Company performs Two Gentlemen of Verona, possibly the Bard's earliest romantic comedy, and a story filled with love, adventure and farce. Two Gentlemen of Verona centers on Valentine and Proteus, loyal friends who are transformed into enemies thanks to their fickle hearts. After traveling to Milan, Valentine falls in love with the Duke's daughter, Silvia. By chance or fate, Proteus also falls in love with her, forsaking the woman he left behind in Verona. A jealous Proteus betrays his friend's plan to elope with Silvia, and the Duke banishes Valentine. Should Valentine and Proteus sacrifice their friendship for desire, or can they somehow find a compromise?

In this classic farce by Carlo Goldoni, the crafty Truffaldino decides to double his wages and his meals by serving two masters at once, but can he pull off this feat without letting either master know that he owes allegiance to the other? And how will he balance his jobs with his pursuit of lady love Smeraldina? Comic fun and complications abound in this classic commedia dell'arte romantic farce where young love is hindered by mistaken identity in a clash between young and old. Celebrated director Christopher Bayes restages his production for Shakespeare Theatre Company following a sold-out run at the Yale Repertory Theatre in 2010. Learn More

Fenomenal play by the Shakespeare Theatre Company! Staying true to the original play, it brings teenage love, friendship, jealousy, betrayal, and family issues to modern times. iPhones, text messages, armed gangs in seedy part of town, cool music, headlines popping above the stage in contemporary jargon, change the temporal context of the play, but cement even more the timelessness of Shakespeare. Judging by the number of teenage girls in the audience, Andrew Veenstra as Valentine, and Nick Dillenburg as Proteus, seem to have big following. It is not difficult to see why!
