It's been a long, hard winter, but now it's making way for spring. Climb aboard the Patriot II, a multi-million dollar high-speed catamaran, and set sail on the Potomac, taking in the sights of the capitol and the gorgeous cherry trees, which, if you are lucky, will be in full bloom. You have only a limited window of time to soak in their beauty of the blossoms and capture photos commemorating the historic occasion, so don't miss this unique way to view one of D.C.'s most popular features. While on board, let the wind blow through your hair on an outdoor deck, or relax in the climate-controlled interior cabin, and enjoy snacks and refreshments available for purchase from two onboard bars. Not a perfect 4-stars but the actual event was a lot of fun and something different. It's one of the more pricey things I've done off a Goldstar, but we all got our money's worth in sparkling wine tasting. Ray Isle was a great teacher and it was a laid-back environment to learn everything, not at all pretentious like I thought it may be. Really my complaint has to be the event management and venue combined. It took up 15minutes walking in every direction and floor level (after asking various staff each time we ended up in the wrong place from the previous instructions) to find the seminar room. I think more signage or maps would help the convention/expo patrons next year.
Join Ray Isle, Wine Editor of Food & Wine Magazine, as he takes a journey around the world to explore the ever-enjoyable world of sparkling wine!. With three 45-minute sessions within each seminar, you can get an in-depth education on wines from different regions and of different varietals.
Session 1: Terrific Value Bubbly for the Holidays The holiday season means parties and dinners, and often toasts as well. You’ll learn tips for finding great sparkling wine without depleting your bank account—what regions and grapes offer top quality bubbles for a modest price—and taste some terrific possibilities for all of your holiday entertaining. Plus there will be info about storing and serving sparkling wine, as well why it’s one of the most versatile food-pairing wines in the world.
Session 2 : Champagne 101: Everything You Need to Know about the World’s Greatest Sparkling Wine People tend to call any wine with bubbles ‘champagne.’ But real Champagne comes from one place: France’s Champagne region. This seminar will be a fun and informative trip to Champagne, with a little bit of history, a little bit of winemaking and vineyards, and a lot of Champagne sipping. You’ll learn the differences between non-vintage and vintage Champagnes, what the words ‘brut,’ ‘demi-sec,’ and ‘tete-de-cuvée’ mean, how many bubbles are in a bottle of Champagne, and more. Session 3 : Pink & Purple: From Rosé Champagne to Sparkling Shiraz Some of the most popular sparkling wines in the world right now are rosé—for good reason, as they’re also some of the best sparkling wines in the world. This is a quick, lively introduction to rosé Champagnes and sparkling wines: the different processes used to make them, how they differ in flavor, what to serve them with. For fun, you’ll also taste some sparkling purple wine (Australian Sparkling Shiraz), which is also gaining popularity in the U.S.
