Acclaimed violinist Leila Josefowicz and choreographer Jessica Lang and her dance company join the National Symphony Orchestra to perform Pulitzer winner John Adams' Violin Concerto in the final program of the NEW MOVES: symphony + dance festival. Called "a master of visual composition" by Dance Magazine, Lang sets original choreography to Adams' melodic and colorful 1993 work. Josefowicz's playing has been described as being full of "zest and fiery personality" (Chicago Sun-Times) -- a perfect match for this expressive, breathless work. Also on the program are Aaron Copland's Pulitzer-winning masterpiece of pioneer life, Appalachian Spring; Michael Daugherty's Superman-inspired Red Cape Tango; and Sinfonia No. 4 ("Strands") by George Walker, the first African-American composer to win the Pulitzer. Ranging from the lyric flow of Water Study to the grounded power of Revolutionary Etude, this production underscores why Duncan is considered the founder of Modern Dance and one of the greatest artists of the modern epoch.
Through the artful blending of dance, music and theater, WDT pays tribute to Duncan’s philosophy as a rich foundation from which new dance experiences can emerge.
