Ariel Dorfman's Reader: Fact and Fiction Clash in Dystopian Drama
In an Orwellian twist George Orwell himself would love (and Ray Bradbury would envy), a government censor discovers that the "subversive" novel he is about to ban in fact describes his own life ... and hints that a terrible fate awaits his family. This is the ingenious setup to Reader, the cerebral thriller produced by Flat Earth Theatre as a part of #DoubleDorfman, their month-long celebration of Chilean-American playwright Ariel Dorfman. Famous for his play Death and the Maiden -- which debuted on Broadway with Glenn Close, Gene Hackman and Richard Dreyfuss -- Dorfman is at his best in Reader, creating a nightmarish reality where fact and fiction clash. Director Jake Scaltreto (Bug, Copenhagen) transforms the Black Box Theater at Arsenal Center for the Arts into an ethereal space that progresses into chaos as this gripping tale unfolds.
