Simon and Janine are sent on an unexpected journey to the war-torn Middle East after their mother, who for years had remained silent, leaves them post-mortem letters with clues to the family's mysterious past. Their quest to unravel their origins leads them in search of a father and brother whose existence was previously unknown to them. Adapted into the Oscar-nominated film, Incendies, and translated into a dozen languages in over 100 productions worldwide, Scorched makes its West Coast debut at American Conservatory Theatre. The A.C.T. production features David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck) as bumbling notary public Alphonse Lebel, who acts as a guide to the two twins in their search. Learn More

Kudos go to the producers and their ability to provide music and musicians to play throughout the show. Also, it was nice to see a director use the entire staging area for his production. However the director seemed to run out of things for the performers to do. For example, actors fall forwards and/or backwards on to the bench or into the floor many times - similar to a slow moving game of ping pong. The actresses did not seem comfortable with their gowns/dresses constantly grabbing them to bunch them in their hands as they walked, danced or moved around the performance space. It took away from the pacing as it becomes slightly comical or stagnant-women would speak or perform an action grab their dress and move on to next action. One thing the actors were good at in trying to keep the flow going was to not to be disrupted as papers were thrown to far towards the audience and needed to be gathered or hair fell down from head during speech or a seam opened on the back of dress... .The actresses were able to stay in character not letting these things bother there current performance. Over all the performers started songs weakly and then their vocal abilities often kicked in....in a theater this small there is no reason for actors to need microphones, they should learn to annunciate and project in a lyrical manner.Written on Nov 09 2009
The words, actions and characters of Edgar Allen Poe were often disturbing, colorful, innovative and provocative. This production was bland, monotonous and lacked the gratitude owed to Poe's imagination and life.

Take a dark and mysterious journey into the life of Edgar Allan Poe. This imaginative musical uses Poe's poetry and short stories as its base and his shifting obsession with the women in his life as its catalyst. With hauntingly beautiful melodies, Nevermore breathes new life into Poe's work and explores a twisted true-life tale that is as bizarre as his classic stories of the macabre.
