Of all the many versions of the King Arthur legend, Camelot, the stage musical by Lerner and Loewe (My Fair Lady, Brigadoon, Gigi), remains one of the most popular. Pageantry, adventure and some of the most gorgeous melodies of the past century combine in this four-time Tony Award-winning show about the tumultuous love triangle between King Arthur, Queen Guenevere and Sir Lancelot. Coinciding with the 50-year anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy, New Repertory Theatre's production spotlights how human passion and need can threaten youthful idealism and a desire to create a better social order. The lead actress, opens the first and second act, seems vocally challenged. She needs to come out strong and build on that, she is very soft throughout the show. She is drowned out on her duet by her fellow singers and can barely be heard over the live music throughout the show. The lead actor who starts his first songs with fast talk also need to be a bit more energetic. The person that sings the song about being sad and a couple other pieces knows how sing and perform & the people playing "the adults" know how to project. It is small theater this softness and low energy should not be a problem. As an ensemble they are wonderful. the choreography is good. It is a also nice hear live, not recorded, music throughout the show.
The performers need to realize they are being watched from the moment they set foot in the performance space...so even when they are going up and down ramps and enter or exiting they should be in character.
