GO SEE IT NOW!! WELL WORTH YOUR INVESTMENT!!Written on Jan 11 2008
WE ALL NEED TO BE REMINDED THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF PREJUDICE AND INTOLERANCE EVEN WITHIN OUR OWN FAMILIES AND PERSPECTIVE COMMUNITIES ( BLACK, WHITE, GAY ) IF YOU DON'T FIT THE PERCEIVED PROTOTYPE!! NOT BLACK ENOUGH, TOO FAT - TOO SKINNY, YOU DON'T LOOK LIKE OTHERS, TOO GAY - NOT GAY ENOUGH, TOO BUTCH, YOUR NICE BUT STRAIGHT.... WE JUST NEED TO OPEN OURSELVES AND HEARTS TO DIVERSITY AND LET PEOPLE BE!!
MY PARTNER AND I REALLY ENJOYED THIS PRODUCTION. VERY STRONG PERFORMANCES AND VERY BELIEVABLE, FUNNY AND MOVING DIALOG THROUGHOUT. SADLY FOR US THE ONLY DISAPPOINTMENTS WERE THAT THE VENUE WASN'T FULL ( AS THEY NEED AND DESERVE OUR SUPPORT!! BUT IT WAS A WEDS NIGHT? ) AND WE JUST DIDN'T FIND THE SWEDISH BOYFRIEND'S SOMEWHAT STIFF PERFORMANCE BELIEVABLE. BUT FEEL BAD EVEN SAYING SO. IT WASN'T FOR LACK OF TRYING OR PASSION.... JUST MISSED THE MARK SOMEHOW FOR BOTH OF US??
THE CELEBRATION THEATRE ITSELF AND WHAT THEY CONSISTENTLY BRING TO THE TABLE IS ALWAYS TOP NOTCH AND A HIGH NOTE IN OUR BOOK. THIS IS HOWEVER NOT A PART OF THE SCHEDULED SEASONS OFFERINGS.

The acting...across the board...is excellent but I found the script to be a bit too neat and tidy and overly simplistic. Never-the-less I enjoyed the show...and with the 90 minute/no intermission running time it is a very pleasant way to pass the time.Written on Jan 15 2008

I loved it. It made me cry and it made me laugh hilariously. There were so many lessons to learn for all families. I would highly recommend it.Written on Jan 14 2008

Description
When Jesse returns home to Chicago for his brother's wedding, he surprises -- or, as his best friend Nina says, "ambushes" -- his family by bringing along his Swedish boyfriend, Christian. Jesse's three siblings have varying reactions to the couple: half-sister Ronnie is supportive and anxious for the family to fully accept Jesse and Christian as a couple; younger brother Tony, once he conquers his initial homophobia, is resistant to welcoming a white man into their African-American family; deeply religious sister Evy thinks that Jesse is betraying the memory of their deceased parents by "choosing" what she considers a sinful, unnatural lifestyle. Through card games, language lessons, and literature, they all strive to live, love, and give as much as they can.
By Paul Oakley Stovall
Directed by Krissy Vanderwarker
Starring Tonya Pinkins, Wes Ramsey, Yassmin Alers, J. Nicole Brooks, Andrew Kelsey, playwright Stovall and J. Karen Thomas
Ms. Pinkins will not appear in the January 17 or 18 performances.
Tonya Pinkins, a Tony nominee for her performance in Caroline, Or Change, received her Tony Award for her performance in Jelly's Last Jam.
