The Ahmanson presents Dreamgirls, the hit musical that inspired the Oscar-winning movie. It's the timeless story of an up-and-coming girl singing group in the 1960s, and the personal and professional struggles they encounter on the road to fame. This new production comes to Los Angeles direct from a hit run at Harlem's legendary Apollo Theater. Learn More

The script was weak, the acting uneven. The overall pacing of the production was very slow. Turns out the woman who wrote the script also Directed and starred in it...never a good idea and usually screams "vanity production". The theatre itself was so cozy and sweet; a very nice space in the heart of WeHo.

As a queer comedy, this play definitely made the audience giggle, especially the anti-LBD (Lesbian Bed Death) scene in the middle. As a queer drama, things got a little bit iffy-issues of being the lovers being cross-cultural (Cuban and Chicana), having a big age gap, and commitment all went mostly untouched. I was disappointed by the predicatable, unrealistic ending, and wished the play had been developed further. It seemed a bit rushed. Lovestruck has lots of potential to be an excellent play, though.

I feel the play was very enjoyable and I would love to see it again.
